MENNEKES had a clear vision: charging electric cars should become as simple and intuitive as using a smartphone. Wallbox users should not only be able to start and stop charging, but have full control over every process: at any time, from anywhere and perfectly matched to their individual needs.
More than 10 years ago, a first app was built together with Werkdigital. But with the growing demands of e-mobility and new technological possibilities came the wish for a comprehensive relaunch: more modern, more powerful and ready for the future.
The new AMTRON® wallboxes from MENNEKES impressed with high-quality technology and minimalist design, but that was exactly what made them a challenge. The app had to live up to this standard: powerful, elegant and at the same time extremely easy to use.
At the same time, the requirements grew more complex. Functions such as controlling charging in real time, managing several devices or planning intelligent charging scenarios were to be integrated without overwhelming the user.
On top of that came new requirements such as integrating company car billing or controlling different power sources, for example from photovoltaic systems. What was needed was a technically demanding solution that still works “like child's play”.
It quickly became clear that the existing app could no longer meet these requirements. Outdated technologies and an old-fashioned design stood in the way of a future-proof solution.
At the same time, the time pressure was enormous. The new app was to be launched alongside the new wallboxes: a complex project with high expectations and little room for error.
An experienced partner was needed who could master the technical complexity and also had a feel for excellent user experiences.
As a long-standing partner, Werkdigital was commissioned to redevelop the app completely, from the first idea to the final launch. First, the existing app was analysed thoroughly and a future-proof technical concept was developed. Building on this, a well-thought-out operating concept emerged that presents even complex functions so that users can always understand them and access them easily. An interactive clickable prototype let people experience the new app at an early stage.
For the technical implementation, Werkdigital relied on React Native to develop the app efficiently and in parallel for iOS, including Apple Watch, and Android. The frontend was complemented by a powerful, scalable cloud backend that ensures reliable communication between the app and the wallboxes.
The result is the MENNEKES 4Drivers App: an application that reduces complex technology to the essentials while offering maximum convenience. Fast, intuitive and ready for the future of e-mobility.
With the relaunch, MENNEKES has taken a decisive step in its digital development. The new app not only creates tangible added value for users, it also contributes directly to the company's strategic goals. MENNEKES is clearly positioning itself as an innovative pioneer in e-mobility.
For the company, the new platform above all means one thing: future security. Thanks to the modern, scalable architecture, new functions can be implemented quickly. At the same time, the app enables new business models and services around charging, billing and energy management.
At Light + Building 2026 in Frankfurt, the MENNEKES 4Drivers App impressed a demanding professional audience and received consistently positive feedback. Today, MENNEKES offers its customers not only first-class hardware but a complete digital experience.

“With Werkdigital, we have found a partner that feels like part of our own team. Werkdigital not only brings an impressive level of technical expertise and experience in e-mobility, but always thinks one step ahead: they proactively made suggestions to improve the result, which made development not only more efficient but also easier. The app developed by Werkdigital is extremely well received by our end customers.”
The family company MENNEKES Elektrotechnik GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in the southern Sauerland region, has stood for innovative, high-performance solutions in industrial plugs and sockets, e-mobility and automotive for more than 80 years.
With its AMTRON® wallboxes, MENNEKES offers electric car drivers perfect charging stations for the home: simply plug in and charge.

At the start, the existing app was evaluated thoroughly: which functions are used daily, where do users drop out, which technologies are still viable? Support requests, store reviews and feedback from MENNEKES product management were taken into account. This review produced a clear target picture for the relaunch, and an honest decision about what to keep, what to improve and what had to be completely rethought.

Honest decision: keep, improve or rethinkA well-thought-out operating concept presents even complex functions such as charging scenarios, device management and PV surplus charging so that every user can understand them. The minimalist interface reflects the premium standard of the AMTRON® wallboxes digitally. An interactive clickable prototype let people experience the new app early on, so workflows could be tested and refined with real users before the first line of code was written.
Clear operating concept for complex functions
Minimalist interface to the AMTRON® standard
Clickable prototype tested early with real usersBased on the analysis, a future-proof technical concept emerged: a scalable architecture for the app and cloud backend, reliable communication with the wallboxes, even with an unstable connection, and clearly defined interfaces. The concept deliberately leaves room for future requirements without existing systems having to be changed fundamentally.
Scalable architecture for app and cloud backend
Reliable communication even with an unstable connection
Clearly defined interfaces with room for the futureWith React Native, the app was developed in parallel for iOS, including Apple Watch, and Android: saving time and money, with a consistent user experience on all platforms. The powerful .NET backend handles device management, user accounts and billing data, while SignalR ensures real-time communication between the app and the wallboxes, so charging can be tracked and controlled to the second.

Real-time communication via SignalRThe launch took place at the same time as the market launch of the new AMTRON® wallboxes: a tight schedule with no room for delays. Werkdigital took care of the complete publication: review processes in both stores, staged roll-outs, monitoring of the first user numbers and quick responses to early feedback. This meant the app was stable and available from day one.
Review processes in the App Store and Google Play
Staged roll-outs with monitoring
Stable operation from day oneThe real work begins with the launch: the app is continuously developed further, with new functions, support for new device generations, updates for current iOS and Android versions and ongoing monitoring in operation. This partnership has existed for more than 10 years and ensures that the 4Drivers App always stays up to date, both technically and in content.
New functions and device generations
Updates for current iOS and Android versions
Ongoing monitoring in operationThe user interface was built with React Native in order to develop for iOS and Android devices in parallel, saving time and money.
The .NET services enable modern, well-structured backends that can be developed further easily at any time.
For communication between server and clients or devices, a technically demanding implementation using SignalR was created.
