MENNEKES had a clear vision: conventional energy distribution was to become digital, intelligent and transparent. Instead of a passive power infrastructure, the company wanted to create a connected system that delivers data, optimises processes and opens up new possibilities for businesses.
With M.ONE came the idea of a holistic IoT ecosystem that connects hardware and software and, for the first time, makes energy truly controllable and measurable: simply, flexibly and without complex IT hurdles.
In many companies, however, reality looked different: energy consumption often remained opaque, critical states were detected too late and controlling the electrical infrastructure was complicated and far from intuitive.
At the same time, MENNEKES faced a challenge of its own. As an established manufacturer of high-quality hardware, the company needed to take the next step towards a digital, data-driven business model. What was missing was a central platform that presents complex IoT data clearly and makes it genuinely usable for users.
The biggest hurdle: reliable real-time communication with potentially thousands of connected devices. Data not only had to be captured continuously, but also processed without delay and translated into controllable actions. This was an enormous challenge for architecture, scalability and system stability.
It soon became clear that developing existing systems further would not be enough. A completely new approach was needed, both technologically and conceptually.
The challenge lay on several levels at once: connecting and processing device data, developing a scalable cloud architecture and, above all, visualising this data so that users gain real added value from it immediately.
On top of that, some of the work was still done with hardware prototypes. This meant the software had to be built under constantly changing conditions and still be designed to be future-proof from the very start.
Together with MENNEKES, Werkdigital took on the design and development of the entire digital platform. The aim was to create a powerful yet intuitive solution that works both as a web application and as an app and meets the high demands of an IoT ecosystem.
As in many projects, this one started with an interactive clickable prototype. It made the future application tangible at an early stage and allowed MENNEKES to gather targeted feedback and optimise the user guidance. Only once this prototype was convincing in every detail did actual development begin.
Handling the complex data structures was particularly challenging. Large volumes of measurements and states had to be prepared so that users could not only understand them but also use them directly. At the same time, the devices were integrated and connected, some of them still at prototype stage, which required a high degree of flexibility in development.
The result is a scalable platform that is already being used by the first pilot customers and forms the foundation for the digital future of MENNEKES.
With M.ONE, MENNEKES has consistently expanded its offering with digital solutions. The company creates new added value for its customers, opens up additional business models and strengthens its position in sustainable energy and infrastructure solutions.
The combination of intelligent hardware and a powerful digital platform makes it possible, for the first time, to make energy distribution truly transparent, secure and efficient: a decisive competitive advantage in a rapidly changing market.
A particular highlight was the presentation of the MENNEKES ONE ecosystem at Light + Building 2026 in Frankfurt. There the system was presented to the public for the first time and was convincing all round: the trade audience showed great interest, and the jury honoured M.ONE with the renowned Designplus Award 2026 in the category “Sustainability & Future Energy+”.
This not only confirmed the innovative strength of MENNEKES but also visibly recognised the joint work with Werkdigital, as an example of how a strong idea becomes a forward-looking digital product.
The family-owned company MENNEKES Elektrotechnik GmbH & Co. KG, headquartered in the southern Sauerland, has stood for innovative and powerful solutions in industrial plugs and sockets, electric mobility and automotive for more than 80 years.
With the plug-and-play IoT ecosystem M.ONE, MENNEKES takes energy distribution in companies to a new level and offers customers a digital, future-proof solution.
Together with MENNEKES, the vision of a holistic IoT ecosystem was translated into a viable concept: what data do the devices deliver, what added value do users need, what does the future data-driven business model require? It soon became clear that developing existing systems further would not be enough. A completely new approach was needed, both technologically and conceptually.
